Guideline for environmental management: Risk-based assessment of ecosystem protection in ambient waters

The environmental quality objectives in the State environment protection policy (Waters of Victoria) (SEPP (WoV)) have adopted a risk-based approach to the management and protection of our aquatic ecosystems. This is a relatively new approach based on the National Water Quality Management Strategy - Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality, 2000. This document provides guidance to support Catchment Management Authorities, Coastal Boards, water authorities and other resource managers on the implemenation of the SEPP (WoV) environmental quality objectives and how to undertake risk-based assessments in ambient waters. It provides decision frameworks, information and practical case study examples of risk-based assessments.
