Building or stationary energy use is EPA’s biggest environmental impact and accounts for 69%of our overall emissions (based on our 2012-13 greenhouse gas inventory). Since 2005-06 EPA has reduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with stationary energy use by 42%.
This is mostly due to the commissioning of a tri-generation plant at our Carlton head office, which largely uses natural gas to generate electricity onsite. Natural gas has much lower emissions intensity than grid electricity and, given the plant is onsite, reduces the transmission losses that come from getting electricity from the grid.
